Huntington Beach Road Trip: Summer Awaits

I absolutely adore traveling, and one of my favorite road trip destinations from San Diego is Huntington Beach! Located only about an an hour and a half from San Diego, the beach city of HB boasts incredible beaches and an aura all of its own. Sparkling streets, friendly folks, good eats, and amazing beachy shopping await in this paradise (and, believe me,  I don’t use that term loosely).

Here’s some insider scoop about where to stay, what to eat, and where to shop:

The Shorebreak Hotel, a luxurious yet utterly casual spot, is definitely my number one choice for hotels in HB. Located on “The Strand”, it is literally only minutes away from the beach and even closer to all the shops on Main Street.

Some photo’s:

Personally, I LOVE all the beachy extras in the rooms, shown above, and the lobby is set up as a surf enthusiasts mecca: with art + photography abounding.

During your visit, I highly recommend ordering room servicing or trying their restaurant & lounge named Zimzala. I’ve had nothing but excellence both ways!

Speaking of FOOD, one of my favorite places to eat in Huntington Beach is, without a doubt in the world,  Sandy’s Beach Grilllocated right on the pier.

Some of my faves here include:

Layered Seafood Cocktail

BBQ Chicken Salad

Seabass

Seared Scallops

  California Cheeses & Cured Meats

When it comes to dessert, I enjoy both the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory on Main St. (chocolate strawberries are my weakness and I love to carry them out and enjoy them on the beach) & Baguetier Bakery (incredible chocolate croissants and also conveniently located on The Strand in HB).

In addition to tons of sweets, Huntington Beach has superb shopping. Now we’re not talking anything fancy, but there are plenty of super cute, casual stores located in the downtown district. My favorite of these? Diane’s Beach Wear!

I always find the best swimsuits at Diane’s and they carry some of my favorite swimwear lines, including L*Space, Vitamin A, Luli Fama, Vix, and B.Swim. In addition, they always have fun shorts, bright tops, and comfortable lounge wear.

Now, this nearly goes without saying, but Huntington Beach has one of the BEST BEACHES in California! Whether you’re into surfing or just laying out in the sun, you will definitely NOT be disappointed with how gorgeous it all is. Don’t believe me? Here’s an actual shot we took of the sunset in HB (says it all!)

Hillcrest Brunch: Snooze

Snooze is one of my favorite new brunch spots that I’ve tried lately within San Diego. The decor is incredibly cute (modern/retro with  high ceiling + retractable windows), the service was amazing, and the food SUPERB; what more could you ask for?  I’ve heard that the wait to dine at Snooze can be a bit long due to the popularity of the eatery, however I experienced no wait at all when I dined and was seated immediately, so don’t be put off by the rumors!

All of the cuisine at Snooze is prepared from scratch with love & the ingredients used are promised  natural, farm-raised, local when possible, and free-ranging.

                                           Now, for the feature presentation:

Ham Benedict III and Chilaquiles Benedict

Treaty Tip: Snooze lets you mix and match any of the Benedict’s to experience more flavors, which is how I ended up withe the above (both AMAZING!)

                                                                 Sandwich I Am

                                                         Havana Daydreaming

Snooze is located at 3940 5th Ave in Hillcrest. For further information & menu, feel free to visit their website by simply clicking here or call (619) 500 3344.

Return From Arizona, Hello San Diego!

While our Arizona vacation was truly amazing, I can’t deny that it feels great to be back home in San Diego! Even after numerous trips to AZ, it takes me a bit to get used to the 90+ degree weather, so the balmy breeze in SD made for a perfect return. Here are some scenic and foodie photos I brought back for my  readers:

Museum of Contemporary Art: La Jolla

Perhaps you’ve driven by this dynamic and utterly unique-looking installation in La Jolla while out about town. The first time I drove past, this dino-sized piece of art immediately caught my eye, enticing me to find out more. The iconic installation,  designed & created by Nancy Rubik in 2006, consists of over 60 kayaks, surfboards, canoes, small rowboats and other ocean vessels held together by stainless steel wires and welds. Titled Pleasure Point, the installations nautical nuances seems more than fitting as the piece overlooks the  vast, open Pacific Ocean.Upon closer inspection, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that installation was actually attached to the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla (MCASD) building. Next time you drive by this eye-catching installation, I challenge you to take a moment, park your car and experience this seemingly gravity-defying piece of art from a whole new perspective.

While at it, wander on into the open, modern space of MCASD for further aesthetic stimulation. The area within allows for a perfect backdrop to stunning and thought-provoking exhibitions. Currently on display is the work of Spencer Finch, an American artist known for his play on mood and perception through the form of  light installations. His exhibit, Rome: Pantheon, Noon, June 14,2011), deals with the memory of a time long passed in ancient Rome and will be on display at MCASD in La Jolla from now until May 30, 2012.

One last thing: make sure to stop by the Edwards Sculpture Garden, located outdoors in the back, on your way out since some intriguing, contemporary art sculptures (both permanent- sited & temporary)can be found in this unique area.

“Transgression is the beginning of actual existence.”

Fruitful Tip: I hear admission to the museum is free for all on the third Thursday of every month, from 5 to 7.  Call (858) 454 3541 or visit Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego for all further information!
