Road Trip: San Diego to Palm Springs

The open road is constantly calling my name & the most recent road trip was from San Diego to Palm Springs.

Palm Springs Road Trip

Not only did we get a chance to explore Palm Springs on this road trip, but we  really made the most of the trip by also managing to visit the cities of Cabazon, Joshua Tree, and Desert Hot Springs.

Let me just say, this trip was one of my favorites, and being only 2 hours driving distance from San Diego, I highly recommend it to all that love an adventure!

The first stop of the trip? The city of Cabazon!

Cabazon boasts 2 things that immediately caught my attention:

1. The World’s Biggest Dinosaurs.

Cabazon Dinosaurs

2. Desert Hills Premium Outlets.

Desert Hills Premium Outlets

The dinosaurs are pretty self-explanatory and awesome, and as for the outlets…OH GOODNESS! Now, we’ve probably all been to an outlet mall or two, but nothing compares to Desert Hills. This top-notch outlet shopping center is home to: Prada, Saint Laurent, Gucci, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Jimmy Choo, Diane Von Furstenburg, Theory and 120 others, all at extremely discounted prices!

(aka shopping heaven)

After Cabazon, our next stop was the mesmerizing city of Joshua Tree.       We stayed at an adorably quirky place called Hicksville. Yup, you read right, Hicksville Trailer Palace!

Hicksville Joshua Tree

This unique spot boasts a variety of themed trailers, along with a saltwater pool, archery & BB gun set-up, roof deck with hot tub & even a tee-pee! We stayed in “The Fifi” trailer, check it out:

Within a mere 5 minutes of Hicksville is Noah Purifoy’s Art Sculpture Garden, a stunningly surreal collection of outdoor installations, a place surely not to be missed!

After checking out Noah’s Outdoor Art Museum (open to all & free), we headed out to Joshua Tree National Park for some hiking:

Following a day of outdoor activity in Joshua Tree, we drove a mere 20 minutes to Desert Hot Springs, a spa town built over one of the world’s very best hot mineral water aquifers. Meaning…amazing hot mineral pools!

The Spring: Desert Hot Springs

We stayed at The Spring, which is an absolutely beautiful resort and day spa with 3 24-hour mineral pools,  a sauna, and many massage & facial options.

Desert Hot Springs

Note that Desert Hot Springs was also voted as having the best drinking water IN THE WORLD! I can vouch for the fact that it is, in fact, the best tap water I have ever tasted, velvet and smooth as can be.

Just mere minutes from the spa was the Cabot’s Pueblo Museum, a unique cultural landmark in Desert Hot Springs.

After some serious pampering and culture, we headed out to Palm Springs, where  we enjoyed several memorable meals and even got to check out the street fair titled Villagefest  (think sweet treats, dozens of food vendors and some really amicable + talented artists) that occurs every Thursday on Palm Canyon Drive.

Note that there are tons of unique design stores located  in the Uptown Design District, so if you’re looking to decorate, look no further.

That evening, we spent the night at Korakia Pensione, an enchanting bed & breakfast named ‘one of America’s sexiest hotels’ by Forbes Traveler.

San Diego Summer Days

This summer has been a hot one, and I almost can’t believe October is already upon us (not complaining since it’s actually one of my favorite months). However, let’s get back to the heat; did you know that so far, this year has been the hottest in all of history and also the 3rd hottest summer ever recorded? If you live in San Diego, this may not be that surprising since we have DEFINITELY been feeling the heat! For me, summertime sunshine meant a lot of swimming in the ocean, languidly relaxing on the beach, and fresh fruit galore.

Take a peek at some of my gorgeous photos (from a camera-phone mind you, since I try not to bring the Canon on many adventures) from summertime 2012:

However, as much as I love the hot weather, I am just about ready for a change in the season: chunky knits, my favorite holidays, time with loved ones, and perhaps some HOT tea instead of the iced tea I’ve been living on. What about you, my dear readers, are you (like me) also quite ready for fall and wintertime?

Hike: 3 Sisters Falls in Pine Valley

One thing that I love about San Diego and its surrounding area is that there are TONS of great places to hike, and I believe that the  3 Sisters Falls Hike is one of the very best! I’d heard (and read) many things about this “treacherous” hike and, of course, I couldn’t wait to try it out for myself! Now I’m certainly not some super avid hiker but I do stay somewhat active so I figured it would be great. And…..it was! Now don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a cakewalk by any means.

If you’re looking for something light & casual, I would recommend the Torrey Pines Hike in La Jolla, because the 3 Sisters Falls Hike is indeed pretty rough. The distance measures approximately 4 miles which isn’t too intimidating, but the terrain is the tricky part. It starts off gentle enough, and then the road starts winding down a bit. As we made our way through beautiful green pathways, I was thinking “hmm, not too bad at all” and then… we encountered the down slope.

The incline is quite steep, so be prepared to spend at least a bit of time on your bum. For the most part, there were rocks and other items to hang on to, so it wasn’t too much of a problem making it down. I will say, there were definitely some sandy parts where you had to be really careful to avoid slipping and sliding down the hill. All in all, just go slow and you shouldn’t have too much of an issue!

Once down, we followed the sound of water and made our way to the waterfalls. At this point in the year, there wasn’t as much water as we expected but then again, it hasn’t rained in quite some time. There was, however, still plenty of water for a dip! We changed behind some rocks and in we went. So refreshing!

The falls area is truly beautiful, so give yourself some time to just relax and take in the scenery while down there. Besides, the break is much needed for the way back up! We had packed some snacks so we lay in the sunshine and refueled with  power bars, beef jerky, muffins, fruit, and the most important: LOTS of water.

On the way back up, we took a path less traveled and ended up a bit lost, surrounded by huge stretches of sage. No worries, we took the time to make some sage bundles to take home and retraced our steps. The uphill return is, quite frankly, the most difficult part of the hike. Make sure to save lots of water because you are going to need it for way back! Luckily for us, we had embarked on our journey pretty late (as in, after 2pm) so by the time we were heading back, it was after 5pm and the sun wasn’t too intense at all. I would imagine it’s incredibly hot earlier in the day! However, make sure to give yourself  at least 2 hrs to get back, because you don’t want to be stuck on the path once it gets dark.

                                                        3 Sisters Falls: Hiking Tips

If possible, drive up in an SUV b/c roads aren’t paved (my car did okay though).

The drive from San Diego will take approximately 1 and a half hours.

Leave small children and animals at home.

Bring lots of water! I brought 4 bottles with me, which turned out just enough.

Make sure to wear appropriate footwear. Sneakers will do!

Definitely bring your swimsuit so that you can take a dip in the waterfall.

Bring some treaty snacks! (my motto in any situation).

                                                    Most Importantly: HAVE FUN!

Last Tip: If, like us, you were in dire need of an extra treat when you got done with the 3 Sisters Hike, I know just the thing: an amazing chocolate shake from nearby Descanso Junction Restaurant, located at 8306 Highway 79 (on the way back to San Diego). And, ahem, the taco salad. AND the Sweet Jalapeno Cream Cheese Burger. All amazing! Trust me, you will work up a huge appetite as well.

Huntington Beach Road Trip: Summer Awaits

I absolutely adore traveling, and one of my favorite road trip destinations from San Diego is Huntington Beach! Located only about an an hour and a half from San Diego, the beach city of HB boasts incredible beaches and an aura all of its own. Sparkling streets, friendly folks, good eats, and amazing beachy shopping await in this paradise (and, believe me,  I don’t use that term loosely).

Here’s some insider scoop about where to stay, what to eat, and where to shop:

The Shorebreak Hotel, a luxurious yet utterly casual spot, is definitely my number one choice for hotels in HB. Located on “The Strand”, it is literally only minutes away from the beach and even closer to all the shops on Main Street.

Some photo’s:

Personally, I LOVE all the beachy extras in the rooms, shown above, and the lobby is set up as a surf enthusiasts mecca: with art + photography abounding.

During your visit, I highly recommend ordering room servicing or trying their restaurant & lounge named Zimzala. I’ve had nothing but excellence both ways!

Speaking of FOOD, one of my favorite places to eat in Huntington Beach is, without a doubt in the world,  Sandy’s Beach Grilllocated right on the pier.

Some of my faves here include:

Layered Seafood Cocktail

BBQ Chicken Salad

Seabass

Seared Scallops

  California Cheeses & Cured Meats

When it comes to dessert, I enjoy both the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory on Main St. (chocolate strawberries are my weakness and I love to carry them out and enjoy them on the beach) & Baguetier Bakery (incredible chocolate croissants and also conveniently located on The Strand in HB).

In addition to tons of sweets, Huntington Beach has superb shopping. Now we’re not talking anything fancy, but there are plenty of super cute, casual stores located in the downtown district. My favorite of these? Diane’s Beach Wear!

I always find the best swimsuits at Diane’s and they carry some of my favorite swimwear lines, including L*Space, Vitamin A, Luli Fama, Vix, and B.Swim. In addition, they always have fun shorts, bright tops, and comfortable lounge wear.

Now, this nearly goes without saying, but Huntington Beach has one of the BEST BEACHES in California! Whether you’re into surfing or just laying out in the sun, you will definitely NOT be disappointed with how gorgeous it all is. Don’t believe me? Here’s an actual shot we took of the sunset in HB (says it all!)

The Villa by Barton G: The Former Versace Mansion

One of my very favorite parts of my Miami vacation was the meal I enjoyed at  the infamous former Versace mansion, now transformed into a restaurant titled The Villa by Barton G. From the ambiance to the cuisine, it couldn’t have been a more perfect evening. And the incredible present I was gifted at the end of the dinner only made the visit that much sweeter! But before I get ahead of myself, let’s take a look at the scrumptious food that was served:

Everything was to-die-for: unique mixes of exploding flavors all working together to create the most elegant, savory, and certainly luxurious cuisine in all of South Beach.

Almost as mesmerizing as the food was the Versace dinnerware that the cuisine was all served upon, from napkin holders to bread and butter plates:

After expressing interest in the dinner plates, our served informed us that some items were actually for sale! After dinner, we made our way to a sitting area where many Versace home goods were presented before us for purchase, which is how I ended up with an astounding present to take home. As soon as I learned that the very plate I was engrossed with inside the restaurant was also available to buy, my heart was pining for it’s unusual beauty. While certainly on the expensive side, I know I will be keeping this extravagant present for decades:

I leave my darling readers with a parting shot of the devastating steps upon which the legendary Gianni Versace was shot while retrieving the newspaper in front of his very own home, now the entrance to this spectacular restaurant:

Return From Miami, Back to San Diego!

Let me start off by saying that my Florida vacation was AMAZING! There were so many places to explore and things to see, I feel like it would have taken a month to even begin to get the true feel of the state. However, the time I was there was spent extremely well: in South Beach, Everglades & the Florida Keys!

But, I’m a firm believer that pictures often times speak louder than words, so here’s an exclusive sneak peek highlighting my favorite parts of my vacation:

                                                                       The Airport:

The Everglades (my favorite part, partly due to my love of Swamp People):

Highly recommend the AIR BOAT RIDE!

My second favorite part? SOUTH BEACH of course!

Can’t beat the clear blue water:

I even got to enjoy some seafood & steak beach-side on Ocean Drive, at a delightful restaurant in which part of the legendary Scarface movie was filmed:

And the Keys were gorgeous; tons of tiny islands all connected by bridges with the most lush trees and beautiful wrap around porches I’ve ever laid eyes on:

Once in Key West, we had a chance to see the house of Hemingway:

                                                    The sunsets were incredible:

Dinner in Key West at the Roof Top Cafe (scrumptious!):

It was a wonderful vacation, and I can’t wait to go back and explore Florida further! Stay tuned for my most favorite part, which merits its very own post.

Return From Arizona, Hello San Diego!

While our Arizona vacation was truly amazing, I can’t deny that it feels great to be back home in San Diego! Even after numerous trips to AZ, it takes me a bit to get used to the 90+ degree weather, so the balmy breeze in SD made for a perfect return. Here are some scenic and foodie photos I brought back for my  readers:
